Mary-Anne Grech Obituary, Death; Mother identified as driver killed when metal tool crashed into windscreen on M80

Mary-Anne Grech Obituary, Death; – A mother from Melbourne has been identified as the victim who lost her life when a metal object detached from a vehicle and struck her windscreen on a busy freeway.

Mary-Anne Grech, aged 46, from Deer Park in the western suburbs of Melbourne, was traveling on the M80 Ring Road at St Albans around 4 PM on Thursday when the metal object impacted her windscreen. Tragically, Grech succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Investigators later determined that the object was a Riv-Nail driver system, typically utilized for maintaining conveyor belts in the manufacturing, food processing, and mining sectors.

At the time of the incident, she was alone in her vehicle, navigating between Ballarat Road and Furlong Road.

Police released an image of the metal object that hit the car.

During a press conference on Friday, Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy from the Major Collision Investigation Unit stated that authorities had not yet identified the vehicle from which the metal fell.

It remains uncertain whether the vehicle was a truck, utility vehicle, or car, and McEvoy appealed to anyone driving towards Greensborough or Altona who may have dashcam footage of the event to come forward. “At this moment, we are unable to determine the vehicle from which this item originated,” he remarked.

Grech’s family, who were contacted by The Age on Friday, are attempting to cope with their grief while assisting the police as much as possible, according to McEvoy. The news of the 46-year-old’s passing prompted an outpouring of condolences from hundreds of mourners on social media.

The metal object that struck Grech’s vehicle was described as chrome, measuring approximately one meter in length and 30 centimeters in width, McEvoy noted. “I hope that someone can check the back of their utility vehicle, truck, or any vehicle they were using to transport it and look for it,” he added. He emphasized the critical importance of drivers securing their loads properly.
