Marjay Dotson Obituary, Death; – A suspect has been charged with murder in relation to a deadly shooting that resulted in the death of one teenager and injured another near a community pool at Douglass Park in Chicago.
Charles Leto, aged 55, faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, and aggravated discharge of a firearm involving an occupied vehicle, as reported by the police. Authorities indicated that Leto opened fire at the park on Thursday evening, injuring a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy.
The older teenager was shot in the back and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Family members identified him as Marjay Dotson. The 14-year-old, identified by relatives as Jeremy Herred, suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and is currently hospitalized in serious condition.
Jeremy is a cousin of Laquan McDonald, the 17-year-old who was fatally shot by a Chicago police officer in 2014.
Relatives of the teenagers stated that the individual who allegedly fired the shots, identified as Leto, is a lifeguard with the Chicago Park District. However, this connection has not been confirmed by officials from the park district or law enforcement.
While the details surrounding the shooting remain ambiguous, an attorney representing the victims’ families suggested that a dispute may have occurred regarding the lifeguard’s bicycle.
“There is absolutely no justification for using a deadly weapon against unarmed children over a disagreement involving your bicycle,” Attorney Jeff Neslund remarked to NBC Chicago on Friday. Friends of the victims have called for charges to be brought against the individual who fired the weapon.
“It is incredibly upsetting that this individual would lose control and take the life of their child,” family friend Mark Carter expressed. “This person needs to be removed from the streets.”]} }}]}
