Background
The incident occurred shortly after 2:45 p.m. on July 17 on the southbound lanes of I-35 near Cassin Road, in proximity to the I-35 and Loop 410 interchange.
On July 17, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus reported that the crash was initiated when a stolen white Chevrolet Camaro collided with a small bus towing a trailer.
The bus impacted a guardrail and was subsequently struck by an 18-wheeler, according to a follow-up report from SAPD dated July 18. This collision resulted in the bus rolling onto its passenger side and ejecting several individuals.
At that time, McManus indicated that four individuals — one of whom was armed with an assault rifle — fled from the Camaro and the crash site. However, the SAPD report mentioned “an unconfirmed number of individuals” exited the Camaro, without specifying if any of them were armed.
As of Wednesday, the individuals who fled have not been located, according to police reports.
SAPD stated that two individuals succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
The San Antonio Fire Department reported that eight individuals sustained life-threatening injuries, while 13 others were admitted to the hospital with minor injuries.
McManus noted that the ages of those injured ranged from young children to senior adults.
In a post on X dated July 18, University Health announced that its staff treated 15 of the patients, with two of them passing away at the hospital on Thursday.
