Manuel Guzman Obituary, Death; – The man who crashed into a canal for unknown reasons and ultimately drowned has been identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.
Just after 9 p.m. Friday, CHP says a Mercury Milan was headed southbound on Chestnut Avenue, north of North Avenue, when, for unknown reasons, the driver veered west and crashed into an active canal.
The driver, identified by the coroner as 36-year-old Manuel Guzman, was able to get out the vehicle and call for help, but went underwater before first responders arrived, according to witnesses.
Officers, along with search and rescue teams, scanned the canal until about 10 p.m. when CHP says Guzman was found 80 feet south of the submerged vehicle.
Officers reported life-saving efforts were made until Guzman was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
CHP is actively working to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
