Leonardo Hernandez Perez Obituary, – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) is currently conducting an investigation into a fatal vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the northeastern area of Charlotte.
According to CMPD, officers responded to a tragic hit-and-run incident on Sunday, September 1, at approximately 10:15 p.m. in the 1100 block of West Sugar Creek Road. Upon their arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive male lying partially in the median of the northbound lanes of W. Sugar Creek Road.
Emergency services, including Charlotte Fire and Medic, also arrived on the scene and transported the pedestrian, later identified as 34-year-old Antonio Darnell Harris, to a nearby hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
Authorities report that the investigation revealed Harris was standing in the median when he was struck by a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was traveling in the wrong direction on West Sugar Creek Road.
The driver of the pickup did not stop and failed to remain at the scene to provide medical assistance to the victim. CMPD later identified and located the driver of the Silverado, who has been named as 31-year-old Leonardo Hernandez Perez.
Perez has been taken into custody by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and faces several charges, including:
– Felony death by vehicle
– Felony hit and run resulting in death
– Operating a vehicle without a license
– Reckless driving.
