Jonathan Enrique Medrano Obituary, Death; – The Kern County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of a 16-year-old boy who was tragically killed after being struck by a train in Shafter; he has been identified as Jonathan Enrique Medrano.
According to the Shafter Police Department, on August 30, 2025, at approximately 1:44 p.m., officers were dispatched to the vicinity of Central Avenue and Central Valley Highway following reports of a train colliding with a pedestrian. Upon their arrival, officers verified that a pedestrian, later identified as Medrano, had been struck by an Amtrak train.
The coroner’s report indicated that Medrano succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the incident. The Amtrak Police Department is currently the lead agency conducting the investigation into this matter.
In light of this incident, several residents of Shafter have initiated a petition. This petition calls upon city officials to take measures such as constructing overpasses or underpasses for pedestrian use and implementing barriers or fences to deter trespassing and avert future tragedies.
