Johnathan Morales Obituary, Death; Pedestrian killed in crash with RV on I-40 in Texas Panhandle

Johnathan Morales Obituary, Death; – A 31-year-old man from Amarillo lost his life late Monday in an accident involving a recreational vehicle on Interstate 40 near Groom. The incident occurred at approximately 11:18 p.m., roughly 0.89 miles west of Groom. The road conditions were clear, with dry pavement, and the speed limit in the vicinity is set at 75 mph.

The accident involved a 2004 Roadtrek 190 Popular RV, which was traveling eastbound in the right lane. The driver, 35-year-old Brandon Langston from Duncan, Oklahoma, attempted to avoid colliding with a pedestrian who was standing in the roadway by braking and swerving to the right, but was unable to prevent the impact. The pedestrian, identified as Johnathan Morales, 31, from Amarillo, was declared dead at the scene by Carson County Justice of the Peace Kathleen Barkley.

Langston, who was wearing a seatbelt, did not sustain any injuries in the accident. Two passengers in the RV, Laura McCartney, 52, from Oklahoma City, and Kevin Scott, 43, from Moore, Oklahoma, also emerged uninjured. McCartney was not wearing a seatbelt, while Scott was. The Texas Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the crash. No additional information has been made available at this time.
