Jamil Owies Obituary, Death; – A man from Milwaukee has been charged with the homicide of a convenience store cashier following a dispute over pizza on Saturday, October 19. Prosecutors have filed charges against 38-year-old Charles Leggett for first-degree reckless homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is currently detained at the Milwaukee County Jail with a bail set at $200,000.

The incident occurred shortly before noon at Action Food and Liquor, located near King Drive and Keefe Avenue. As detailed in a criminal complaint, a 911 caller reported that he did not witness the altercation but heard someone arguing with the cashier. Following this, he heard a single gunshot and discovered the victim lying on the floor behind the counter.

The victim, identified as 26-year-old Jamil Owies, succumbed to his injuries at the scene despite the efforts of first responders. Prosecutors noted that a bullet was located on the floor near his body, and a 9mm bullet casing was found inside a candy box on the checkout counter.

Surveillance footage captured the shooter arriving in a Nissan Sentra and entering the store alone around 11:45 a.m. that day. According to court documents, the shooter placed an order at the counter, proceeded to the back of the store, and then returned to engage in conversation with Owies.

Although the video lacked audio, prosecutors indicated that it was evident the shooter was agitated as he gestured towards Owies, who appeared to respond in kind. The shooter then brandished a firearm, reached over the counter, and shot Owies in the chest before fleeing the scene in the Nissan.

The complaint asserts that the shooter’s face was “clearly visible” in the high-quality surveillance footage, which also prominently displayed the Nissan Sentra’s distinctive features and license plate.

Leggett was identified as a suspect through facial recognition technology utilizing prior booking photographs. Court documents revealed that Leggett was involved in a 2022 vehicle accident where the license plates of the Chrysler 300 he was in did not correspond with the registered vehicle, which was a black 2010 Nissan Sentra.
