At approximately 6:13 a.m., authorities discovered 32-year-old Jake Kennedy in his cell suffering from multiple stab wounds during a routine security check. Despite the officers’ efforts to administer life-saving measures and transport him to the facility’s medical area, he was pronounced dead shortly after 7 a.m.

His cellmate, 30-year-old Tyler Yates, was restrained and removed from the cell, with an improvised weapon found at the scene, according to CDCR. On February 24, both Kennedy and Yates were accused of fatally attacking another inmate, 39-year-old Jonathan Rude, using makeshift weapons in the prison’s main exercise yard. Following that incident, both men were placed in restricted housing, although it remains unclear if they were still in that status at the time of the latest stabbing.

This incident marks the third time Yates has been accused of murdering an inmate while incarcerated. On February 2, 2024, he received a life sentence with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder as a second-striker, stemming from an in-prison offense where he assaulted 33-year-old Nathan Marcus in the recreation yard.

Additionally, this homicide coincides with a recent riot at California State Prison, Sacramento, involving 40 inmates in the main yard, resulting in five individuals requiring medical attention, as reported by CDCR. Yates will remain in restricted housing while the investigation into the homicide continues.
