Isaiah Tyson Anthony Obituary, Death; – A teenager has been charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting death of a 26-year-old man on a dead-end street in southwest Birmingham last September.
According to the lead detective on the case, the accused, Deionya Saki Harley, 19, intended to rob the victim, Isaiah Tyson Anthony, who was anticipating the arrival of his first child. During the preliminary hearing before Jefferson County District Judge William Bell, Birmingham homicide Detective Jarvelius Tolliver testified that Anthony was discovered fatally shot, lying face down on Laure Avenue, with his pockets turned inside out. The detective reported that investigators collected between 30 to 40 shell casings from the crime scene.
Harley himself was injured during the incident and required surgery for a gunshot wound to the abdomen. At the conclusion of the hearing, Judge Bell determined that sufficient evidence existed to forward the case to a grand jury for potential indictment. The prosecution is being handled by Jefferson County Deputy District Attorney Charissa Henrich.
Harley, a resident of Birmingham, has been incarcerated in the Jefferson County Jail since February 2 on separate charges of attempted murder and first-degree robbery. He is being defended in the capital case by attorneys Joseph Page and Charles Black from the Jefferson County Public Defender’s Office.
The fatal shooting occurred around 5 p.m. on September 18, outside a residence located at 1716 Laurel Avenue. Detective Tolliver, the sole witness during Thursday’s hearing, indicated that Anthony had visited the house to meet with others. Upon police arrival, they found Anthony’s vehicle still running, with a crumpled $1 bill lying on the ground nearby. Investigators concluded that the gunfire originated in the driveway, with numerous shell casings and blood leading to the street where Anthony was ultimately located.
In addition to multiple gunshot wounds, Tolliver noted that the victim had also suffered other injuries. “He had scrapes and bruises as if he were running and fell,” the detective testified. Upon their arrival, law enforcement also discovered that a second individual had been shot.
