Isaiah Caldwell Obituary, Death;- Elizabeth City State University has identified the victim in the April 27 on-campus shooting that killed one man and injured several students.
Isaiah Caldwell, 24, was the victim who died in the shooting, the university said in a statement posted to its website Saturday.
“Our thoughts remain with all victims, their families, and all affected by this tragedy,” the college stated. “Our continued thoughts and prayers are also with the family and loved ones of Mr. Isaiah Caldwell, whose life was lost in the shooting.”
“Isaiah was a remarkable brother who always sought the positive in every situation,” the organization stated on Instagram. “He was a pillar of support for many brothers and a mentor to others. He was someone you could always rely on, a dedicated servant of the community and a genuinely great man. His loss leaves a profound void, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”
The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. April 27 during Viking Fest events at the college. In addition to Caldwell, four people, including three ECSU students, suffered gunshot wounds and two ECSU students suffered other injuries during the subsequent commotion.
This weekend’s update said all injured students have been treated and released from the hospital.
The shooting remains under investigation, and no suspect information has been released. The university’s police department along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are following leads, the statement said. The Elizabeth City Police Department and sheriff’s offices from Pasquotank and Camden counties are also assisting.
The statement also said law enforcement is leveraging technology to obtain information and has increased building checks. Law enforcement have also visited every campus residence hall in conjunction with university leadership. Detectives have established an inbox where people can submit photos, videos or other related information. Email ECSU_Tips@ecsu.edu or call 252-335-3266 to share information.
Following the shooting, the university canceled two days of classes and held the final three days of classes remotely. Final exams will also be delivered remotely. University officials have not shared information with the media on whether commencement ceremonies will still be held, but ECSU’s website states that it is scheduled for 10 a.m. May 9 at the Fine Arts Center.
