Elaine Williams Alexander,Glenn Wayne Venson Obituary, Death; – A man from Carthage has been charged in connection with a 2020 accident in Harrison County that resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
Samuel Ethan Smith, aged 30, has been indicted on two counts of criminally negligent homicide. He was arrested on September 2 for these charges and subsequently released on September 3 after posting bonds totaling $50,000.
Law enforcement officers were summoned to the scene of a collision on Interstate 20 at approximately 3:10 p.m. on March 11, 2020, involving four vehicles, which led to the fatalities of Elaine Williams Alexander, aged 67, and Glenn Wayne Venson, aged 66.
As per a crash report submitted in this case, Smith was traveling eastbound in the left lane of I-20. In front of him was a vehicle operated by Alexander, with Venson as a passenger, alongside a tractor-trailer transporting another vehicle.
Witnesses indicated that traffic had become congested, resulting in a slowdown in both the left and right lanes, according to the crash report. Smith informed an investigator that he had diverted his attention from the road to his GPS device.
The crash report states that Smith’s lack of attention led to his failure to manage his speed, causing him to collide with the rear of Alexander’s vehicle.
As a result of the impact, Alexander’s vehicle was propelled into the truck-trailer and subsequently into the center median, where it collided with the cable barrier.
Although Smith tested negative for alcohol, he did test positive for cannabis, as noted in the crash report.
