Deonte Alexander Obituary, Death; – Authorities on Friday identified the man killed in a West Side shooting that later led to police confronting the suspect and wounding him.

Deonte Alexander, 38, of Cleveland, was found with a gunshot wound at 1 p.m. Wednesday on the sidewalk near the 2200 block of West 73rd Street, just north of Clark Avenue.
The office of the Cuyahoga County medical examiner released Alexander’s identity. It comes as police continue to investigate the shooting.

After Alexander was wounded, Cleveland police received a description of a suspect. Officers later confronted the person, who had a gun. Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd said during a Wednesday news conference that officers then shot the suspect, who was later transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

The suspect’s identity has not been released Friday, despite multiple attempts by cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer to reach police officials for additional information on the incident.

No officers were injured during the incident. It resulted in two separate investigations – one for the initial homicide and another for the officer-involved shooting.

Details about what led to the police shooting, including whether the suspect pointed a firearm at officers, remain unclear.

Cleveland police have investigated 64 homicides this year, a drop of nearly 19% from the same time last year when investigators reported 79 homicides, according to data from Cleveland police.
