David Burley Obituary, Death; – A man has been charged in relation to a fatal accident in Hudson, WI, that resulted in the death of 58-year-old David Burley, co-owner of Blue Plate Restaurant Company.
Andre Lamont Mathews, 33, is facing a charge of homicide due to intoxicated use of a vehicle in St. Croix County Court. The charging documents indicate that he had previously been sentenced to three years in prison in 2018 for fifth-degree drug possession, which may lead to a harsher penalty if he is convicted of the current charge.
As reported earlier, emergency responders were dispatched to the accident on I-94 near mile marker 1 in Hudson at approximately 2:49 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a damaged silver Infinity and a motorcycle, also damaged, lying beside the vehicle.
Witnesses informed investigators that the Infinity, later confirmed to be driven by Mathews, was speeding when it veered off the road. Mathews then returned to the roadway and collided with Burley’s motorcycle. Both vehicles struck the concrete median and came to a stop. Court documents reveal that authorities suspected Mathews was under the influence of alcohol, as they could detect the smell of alcohol on him.
Both Mathews and Burley were transported to the hospital, where Burley was pronounced dead. At the hospital, Mathews was described as “disoriented and lethargic” in court documents. He struggled to respond to questions and claimed he was unaware of his location or whether he had been driving.
He declined to undergo a blood test, prompting authorities to obtain a search warrant. Medical staff indicated that Mathews would remain hospitalized for three to four days. Burley was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which was damaged during the incident.
