Daniel H Escalera Obituary, Death; – A man wielding a chainsaw was shot and killed by police on Sunday morning in the western suburbs, according to officials.
The incident involving law enforcement occurred in the 900 block of North 5th Avenue at the River Glen of St. Charles senior living facility, as reported by St. Charles police. The individual has been identified as 41-year-old Daniel H. Escalera from Stockwell, Indiana. Reports indicate that Escalera was allegedly without a shirt while attempting to cut down a tree outside the building around 8:45 a.m. before entering the senior living facility.
Upon entering, he reportedly began to confront residents of the senior home with the chainsaw, as stated by responding officers. After attempts to de-escalate the situation were unsuccessful, police deployed a taser, but the man allegedly persisted in his aggressive behavior towards both tenants and officers.
At that juncture, an officer discharged his service weapon, resulting in the suspect being shot, according to St. Charles police.
Escalera was subsequently transported to a hospital in Geneva, where he succumbed to his injuries. Several residents of the senior home and officers received treatment for minor injuries, as reported by police.
A representative for River Glen of St. Charles released the following statement:
“An unauthorized individual briefly entered our community and was swiftly apprehended by responding officers. We are profoundly appreciative of the prompt actions taken by our team and law enforcement. We wish to assure everyone that our community is secure, and all residents and staff members are safe. The safety and security of our residents and staff are our utmost priority. We are collaborating closely with law enforcement as they continue their investigation into this isolated incident.”
