Dana Markko,Scott Overfelt Obituary, Death; – A wrong-way driver killed in a crash in Waushara County was under the influence of alcohol, preliminary investigation by the sheriff’s department shows.
The Waushara County Sheriff’s Office says callers reported a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 39 in the town of Coloma the night of July 17. A short time later, a crash was reported in the northbound lane.
The driver 39-year-old Dana Markko of Amherst, was taken to the hospital, where she died two days later. The driver of the other vehicle, 59-year-old Scott Overfelt, died at the scene.
“This was a tragic and entirely preventable event,” Waushara County Sheriff Wally Zuehlke said in a news release. “Two lives are now lost — one an innocent motorist, the other a result of impaired and reckless decision making. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating incident.”
Sheriff’s officials say witness statements, toxicology tests and scene investigation all point to alcohol as being a factor in the crash.
