Dana Bailey Jr Obituary, Death; – A man has admitted guilt for the shooting and murder of his girlfriend’s husband in their Southeast D.C. residence two years prior, as announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) on Friday.

On December 5, 2022, shortly after 10:15 a.m., the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) discovered a man with a gunshot wound to his chest in a Southeast D.C. apartment complex. He was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries approximately one hour later.

The victim was later identified as Dana Bailey, Jr., the spouse of Lakeyvette Sears, who had made the initial 911 call regarding the shooting. Court documents reveal that responding officers encountered Sears, her teenage son, and her son’s friend within the apartment. Before his passing, Bailey informed the police that “Papi” was the individual who shot him, and that his wife was aware of Papi’s identity.

At the scene, Sears informed the MPD that she had observed Papi fleeing the apartment post-shooting, wearing an orange hat and a black jacket. However, in a subsequent interview, she retracted her statement, claiming she could not confirm whether the individual she saw was indeed Papi.

“Papi” was later identified as Keyon Slaughter, the boyfriend of Sears. In his plea agreement, Slaughter acknowledged that he confronted Bailey in his apartment that day and shot him once in the chest with a .40 caliber handgun.

Following the incident, he fled to North Carolina. At the time of the crime, he was under supervised probation due to a prior armed robbery conviction from Charles County, Md. He was apprehended approximately seven months after the shooting in July 2023 and has remained in custody since then.

The USAO indicated that Sears was also indicted for her husband’s murder and has pleaded guilty to obstructing justice. As a result of his guilty plea, Slaughter is facing a sentence of 16 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. His sentencing is scheduled for August 29, 2025.
