Cooper Dawson Obituary, Death; – A police officer who lost his life during a gunfire exchange with a suspect on the night of November 25 was the first officer from Greenville to be killed in the line of duty in over a century. The officer has been identified as Cooper Dawson.
Dawson conducted a traffic stop that escalated into a foot chase in the 3500 block of Pickett Street around 7:40 p.m. on Monday, according to police reports. He was ambushed and shot multiple times during this encounter. “Despite sustaining critical injuries, Officer Dawson exhibited remarkable bravery by returning fire and hitting the suspect,” the police stated in a social media update.
Both Dawson and the injured suspect were taken to a local hospital, after which Dawson was airlifted to a larger facility, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
“We are devastated by the loss of Officer Cooper Dawson, who selflessly risked his life to serve and protect our community,” stated Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith. “We ask that you keep Officer Dawson’s family, our department, and the Greenville community in your thoughts and prayers during this profoundly challenging time.” The suspect has not yet been publicly identified.
The Texas Rangers from the Department of Public Safety will be assisting in the ongoing investigation, as reported by the police. Officer Dawson had previously served with the Garland Police Department.
“The commitment he demonstrated to public service and his steadfast dedication to safeguarding the Greenville community will always be remembered,” the department remarked in a statement.
