Brothers Luke,Benny Smith Obituary, Death; – An extended family has been irrevocably altered following the tragic loss of two teenage brothers and their young cousin in a catastrophic light aircraft accident in Victoria.
The victims of the aviation incident in East Gippsland on Saturday have been identified as brothers Luke and Benny Smith, aged 20 and 16, along with their cousin Dusty Daly, who was 15 years old. Eyewitnesses reported observing the aircraft circling over Tinamba West, accompanied by an unusual engine noise, before it ultimately crashed into a field and ignited around 5:45 PM.
The family released a statement acknowledging their profound loss. The pilot and his brother hailed from Tongala, located in central Victoria, while their cousin was from Tinamba West.
“This is an extraordinarily challenging time for our family, and we respectfully request privacy as we cope with our grief,” the statement to the Herald Sun conveyed.
“Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragedy, and we seek your understanding as we concentrate on supporting one another during this difficult time.
“We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and the broader community.
“Thank you for your respect and empathy.” Lorraine MacGillivray, founder and chief flying instructor of Edge Aviation, noted that the pilot served as a flight instructor. “Yesterday marked a turning point for these families,” she remarked.
“I encountered a few family members, and as one might expect, they are devastated and struggling to comprehend the events that have transpired. “In regional communities like this, many individuals are interconnected, leading to a significant ripple effect throughout the area.”
She emphasized that it would be inappropriate to speculate on the cause of the crash, acknowledging that the aviation community is also mourning this loss. “Such accidents are invariably tragic, and I believe our regulatory bodies need to closely examine the reasons behind these incidents and consider whether changes can be made,” she stated.
