Amiel Maerling Obituary, Death; Wrong-way driver killed in fiery Goshen crash identified

Amiel Maerling Obituary, Death; – Amiel Maerling, aged 32, from Greenfield Park, has been confirmed as the individual who lost his life in a devastating accident on Wednesday night on State Route 17 in Goshen.

Authorities reported that at approximately 10:05 p.m., Orange County 911 issued a warning regarding a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of State Route 17. The Ford F-150 pickup truck, reportedly operated by Maerling, was making its way east from Sullivan County.

The vehicle traveling in the wrong direction was observed by a member of the Middletown Police between Exits 119 and 118, prompting the officer to execute a U-turn in an attempt to intercept it. Shortly thereafter, the Ford was spotted by a State Trooper between Exits 120 and 119, who also turned around to pursue the vehicle.

Despite the efforts to stop him, Maerling continued to drive at a high speed and, near Exit 122, collided head-on with a 2020 International tractor-trailer. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames, and Maerling was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered serious injuries and was transported to Garnet Medical Center, according to police reports.

In addition to the Middletown Police, the Wallkill Town Police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office participated in the attempts to halt the wrong-way driver. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway.
