Amanda Buchanan Obituary,  – A woman who was assaulted while on duty at a 7-Eleven in Chula Vista over the weekend has passed away, as confirmed by a family member on Thursday.

Amanda Buchanan, who endured burns covering 80% of her body, had been on life support since Saturday, following an incident in which her ex-boyfriend allegedly arrived at her workplace, doused her with gasoline, and ignited her.

“The severity of her injuries was such that we consulted with the surgeons regarding her quality of life, and it was determined that it would not improve. Therefore, we made the decision to discontinue life support to prevent her from suffering,” stated Dominic Rivera, Buchanan’s son, on Wednesday. Rivera confirmed to NBC 7 on Thursday that she had succumbed to her injuries.

The assault occurred near the intersection of Broadway and L Street at approximately 8 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Chula Vista Police Department. Jose Carlos Villanueva, 47, was apprehended and appeared in court earlier this week. Prosecutors allege that he had been planning the attack for an extended period.

Villanueva has pleaded not guilty to charges of torture, arson, and attempted murder, with the possibility of those charges being elevated following Buchanan’s death. Additionally, a coworker of Buchanan’s also suffered injuries during the incident. Villanueva remains in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for September 6.
