Alex Durante Obituary, Death; – A 19-year-old has been arrested in relation to a shooting on the South Side that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old boy and left another child injured on Thursday afternoon, according to Chicago police.
The two boys, aged 12 and 15, were present in a vacant lot located in the 600-block of West 47th Street in the Canaryville neighborhood around 3:45 p.m. when they became engaged in a confrontation with an unspecified number of suspects, police reported. Chopper 7 was overhead at the scene, which is in close proximity to Tilden High School.
At least one of the suspects brandished a firearm and opened fire on the boys, police stated. The 12-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, while the 15-year-old was shot in the hip area, according to the Chicago Police Department. One of the boys managed to flee to the rear of a nearby barbershop before collapsing on the ground.
Both boys were transported to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, as reported by the police. On Friday morning, authorities announced that the 15-year-old had succumbed to his injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently identified him as Alex Durante.
On Friday, police confirmed the arrest of Daniel Navas Maiver, 19, in connection with the fatal shooting. Maiver faces charges of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, according to police. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sunday.
There has been no information released regarding whether any individuals involved are students at Tilden High School.
