AKiya Mills Obituary, Death; – A 19-year-old woman from Greene County tragically lost her life on Saturday evening in a collision involving a semi-trailer truck near the junction of U.S. 49 and U.S. 98, as reported by the Hattiesburg Police Department.
The incident took place around 5:10 p.m. in the 4800 block of U.S. 49, where a passenger vehicle struck the semi-trailer truck in the southbound lanes. The driver of the passenger vehicle, A’Kiya Mills from McLain, Mississippi, was declared deceased at the scene by the Forrest County Coroner’s Office.
The southbound lanes of U.S. 49 remained closed for several hours while emergency personnel responded and cleared the area, prompting authorities to advise drivers to avoid the vicinity and expect delays. In terms of legal implications, fatal accidents involving commercial trucks typically prompt investigations into factors such as speed, visibility, traffic patterns, and driver attentiveness.
Should the investigation reveal negligence on the part of the semi-truck driver, A’Kiya Mills’ family may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim. Investigators will likely review evidence from the crash scene, vehicle data, and any available surveillance footage to ascertain liability.
The Hattiesburg Police Department is currently conducting an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with no additional information released regarding potential citations, charges, or contributing factors. I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of A’Kiya Mills during this sorrowful period.
