Hersh Goldberg-Polin Obituary, Death; – The family of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American hostage, announced his death early Sunday, concluding a tireless effort by his parents to secure his release, which included meetings with global leaders and a speech at the Democratic convention last month.

Goldberg-Polin, aged 23, was abducted by militants during a music festival in southern Israel on October 7. A resident of Berkeley, California, he suffered the loss of part of his left arm due to a grenade explosion during the incident. In April, a video released by Hamas depicted him, visibly under duress and missing his left hand, prompting renewed protests in Israel demanding that the government take more decisive action to ensure his and other hostages’ freedom.

The announcement from Israel is likely to intensify calls for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to negotiate a deal for the return of the remaining hostages. Netanyahu has maintained a hardline stance in negotiations, asserting that military pressure is essential for the hostages’ return. Reports from Israeli media indicate that he has clashed with senior security officials advocating for an urgent resolution.

President Joe Biden, who had previously met with the parents, expressed his devastation and outrage. He stated, “It is as tragic as it is reprehensible. Make no mistake, Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes. We will continue to work tirelessly to secure the release of the remaining hostages.”

The family released their statement early Sunday, shortly after the Israeli army reported the discovery of bodies in Gaza. “With broken hearts, the Goldberg-Polin family is devastated to announce the death of their beloved son and brother, Hersh,” the statement read. “The family expresses gratitude for the love and support received and requests privacy during this difficult time.”

There was no immediate response from the army regarding the specifics of his death or the identities of the other bodies found. However, Biden confirmed that a total of six bodies had been recovered from a tunnel in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. “I have come to know his parents, Jon and Rachel. They have shown remarkable courage, wisdom, and strength.”
