Mary A Sumara Obituary, Death; – A 77-year-old woman from Demotte lost her life on Thursday in a multi-vehicle accident on I-65, according to the Indiana State Police.

At 11:35 a.m. on Thursday, troopers from the Indiana State Police arrived at the scene of a multi-vehicle collision on the northbound lanes of I-65, specifically at the 228.3 mile-marker, which is located two miles south of the Demotte/Roselawn exit.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a white Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling northbound when the driver failed to notice that traffic had significantly slowed ahead. This slowdown was attributed to reduced visibility caused by blowing snow across the road. The Trailblazer subsequently collided with the rear of a yellow Toyota Sienna, which resulted in the Sienna being pushed into the back of a semitruck also heading northbound.

The Sienna incurred extensive damage from the incident. A rear-seat passenger, who was in a wheelchair, sustained life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead by the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.

The deceased passenger has been identified as Mary A. Sumara, 77, from Demotte, Indiana. Her family has been informed of the tragedy. The driver of the Trailblazer, along with a one-year-old passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Franciscan Hospital in Crown Point for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver of the semitruck was unharmed.
