Ryan Fairrington Obituary, Death; – The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identity of the individual who lost his life in a tragic hit-and-run incident that occurred on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as 43-year-old Ryan Fairrington, who was reported to be homeless, according to a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office. Fairrington was fatally struck alongside his dog at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Eddy Lane at approximately 2:46 a.m.

A representative from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that an unidentified vehicle was traveling south on Seventh Avenue while a man in his 30s was walking his dog. For reasons that remain unclear, the vehicle collided with both the man and his dog before fleeing the scene, as reported by the CHP.

Both the pedestrian and the dog sustained severe injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was apprehended shortly before 7 p.m. A CHP spokesperson indicated that a 54-year-old resident of Watsonville voluntarily surrendered to authorities.

Pedro Martinez Urbano was arraigned last week on charges of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence and hit-and-run resulting in death. He has pleaded not guilty to both allegations. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 12, 2024.
