Angel Lata Landi,Wilma Augustin Obituary, Death; – A third individual has lost their life following an apparently random assault perpetrated by a suspect described as having “severe mental health issues,” who engaged in a stabbing spree across New York City on Monday.
The individual believed to be responsible for these attacks was in police custody by Monday afternoon after being discovered with blood-stained clothing and in possession of two kitchen knives. The New York Police Department identified him on Tuesday as Ramon Rivera, 51, and announced that he would face three counts of first-degree murder.
The two deceased victims have been named as Angel Lata Landi, 36, a construction worker from Peekskill, New York, and Wilma Augustin, also 36, from Manhattan. Authorities have indicated that the third victim is a 67-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed pending family notification.
During a press conference on Monday, Mayor Eric Adams characterized the stabbings as “unprovoked attacks.” “Today, we mourn three innocent New Yorkers who were subjected to a horrific assault while simply going about their daily lives,” Adams stated, flanked by police officials.
The second incident occurred approximately two hours later at 10:25 a.m. on 30th Street, where an unidentified 67-year-old man was fishing when he was stabbed multiple times in the abdomen. Both this man and Lata Landi were transported to the same hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
At 10:55 a.m., Rivera is believed to have committed his final attack on a woman at the intersection of 42nd Street and 1st Avenue, near the United Nations headquarters. Augustin, who sustained stab wounds to her chest and left arm, was taken to a nearby hospital but later died.
“He approached them and began attacking with the knives without any prior interaction or theft,” stated Joe Kenny, Chief of Detectives for the New York Police, during the press conference. A cab driver who witnessed the third attack initially thought it was a robbery and followed the assailant while notifying the police, leading to Rivera’s apprehension.
