Around 10 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, a deputy from the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office observed a vehicle being driven erratically on Yelm Highway. The driver was recorded traveling at 62 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, according to The Olympian.
The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop; however, the driver fled west on Yelm Highway. The deputy pursued the vehicle south on Henderson Boulevard but began to lose sight of it. The vehicle was completely out of view when the driver turned west onto Tumwater Boulevard, as reported by The Olympian. Upon reaching Capitol Boulevard, the deputy encountered a crash scene involving the suspect and an uninvolved driver, later identified as Nielsen, according to The Olympian.
Nielsen was pronounced dead at the scene. The 30-year-old man charged with causing the crash has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and eluding a police vehicle. The suspect has been identified by the state patrol as Matthew R. Orr, from Winlock.
