Responders to the “possible explosion” found “three Delta employees on the floor,” with medical personnel working to address “major bleeding,” as outlined in the incident report from the Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department. An eyewitness recounted hearing an explosion and seeing workers evacuating the area, as mentioned in the report.
“I realized they were running to get help. I approached the explosion site and saw a body lying face down, motionless, surrounded by blood,” the employee told officials, according to the report.
Delta clarified that the incident involved a tire and its components. At the time of the occurrence, the wheel was not attached to any aircraft nor located near one, as confirmed by Delta.
The wheels were in the process of “disassembly for maintenance” and were not connected to any aircraft, according to investigators. Airport officials verified that the incident did not disrupt airport operations.
Delta stated that it is “working closely with local authorities and conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.” The airline expressed its condolences, stating it is “heartbroken” and “grateful for the swift actions taken by first responders and medical teams at the scene.”
The deceased employees have been identified as Mirko Marweg, 58, and Luis Aldarondo, 37, according to the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office. The identity of the third employee, who is currently hospitalized, has not yet been revealed.
