Don Klostreich, the influential coach who built Sunnyside High School into a nationally recognized wrestling powerhouse, has passed away at the age of 86 due to health-related causes.
Arriving at Sunnyside in 1973, Klostreich quickly reshaped the program into a model of excellence. Over a 15-year span, he guided the team to nine state championships, including their first major title in 1979 and an impressive streak of victories throughout the 1980s. His work laid the foundation for continued success, with the program eventually reaching dozens of state titles under future coaches.
Beyond achievements on the mat, Klostreich was widely respected for his dedication to mentoring young athletes. Known for his disciplined approach, he emphasized teamwork, resilience, and personal growth. Many former wrestlers credit him with shaping their character and life direction.
