David Long Obituary, Death; – A locksmith who was shot while aiding sheriff’s deputies in serving an eviction notice in Vero Beach, Florida, has succumbed to his injuries, raising the death toll from last week’s shooting to three, according to the sheriff’s office.

The civilian locksmith, 76-year-old David Long, was recognized for his “dedicated service and kind demeanor,” as stated by Sheriff Eric Flowers in a social media post on Sunday.

Indian River County Sheriff’s Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, a 25-year veteran of the department, was fatally shot when the individual they were attempting to evict opened fire on Friday morning. That individual, Michael Halberstam, passed away from his injuries on Saturday, Flowers reported.
Another deputy, Florentino Arizpe, who sustained a shoulder injury, was discharged from the hospital over the weekend, according to the sheriff.

The sheriff’s office had received seven calls from the residence in the past month, “almost all” of which were made by the mother regarding her son, the sheriff mentioned during a news conference on Friday. Nevertheless, he indicated that deputies did not anticipate any trouble upon their arrival to evict Halberstam.

Flowers did not specify in his post whether Sweeting-Mashkow and Long were equipped with protective gear, and the sheriff’s office did not reply to an email regarding this issue on Monday morning.
