Steve Mecklenburg Obituary, Death; – A person who was killed shortly after an attempted traffic stop in Marinette County has been identified.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) reported that a Niagara Police Officer attempted to pull over 57-year-old Steve Mecklenburg on Wednesday, November 5th.
However, Mecklenburg evaded the traffic stop in the 1000 block of Main Street, accelerating at a high rate of speed and veering into oncoming traffic. His vehicle subsequently collided with a commercial vehicle.
Despite the provision of aid, the 57-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Niagara Police Officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure for the police department.
DCI is continuing the investigation with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Rescue, and the Niagara Fire Department.
Once the investigation is concluded, they will submit evidence to the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office to ascertain whether charges will be filed against the officer.
