Dennis Hoie Obituary, Death; – A family member has confirmed that the individual who was fatally shot during an officer-involved incident on Thursday is Dennis Hoie.

In a post on Facebook, a family member characterized Hoie as “a proud Vietnam Veteran and a 50-year member of Post 16” and described him as “a more soft spoken, kind, gentle man.” The family member noted that PTSD and mental health challenges “tragically took his life.”
According to the post, Hoie had failed to attend a recent court hearing, which resulted in the warrant that led to Thursday’s events.

The shooting took place after a deputy from Clearwater County recognized Hoie at gas pumps adjacent to a Cenex convenience store located in the 1300 block of Central Street West. When the deputy approached him to execute the outstanding warrant, a physical confrontation ensued, prompting Hoie to flee in his vehicle.

Following a chase eastbound on Highway 2, Hoie drove through residential yards before being apprehended. When deputies and Bagley police officers attempted to remove him from the vehicle, he discharged what authorities referred to as a “flare type projectile.”

In response, a deputy discharged their firearm, hitting Hoie. Despite attempts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an investigation. The family member has requested prayers for both the Hoie family and the deputy involved in this incident.

Hoie is survived by a sister and three brothers.
