Abdul Bakr Jafar Obituary, Death; – Authorities have apprehended a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run incident in Maplewood, and the victim has been identified.
On Friday at approximately 11 a.m., detectives from the Maplewood police department, in collaboration with officers from Sleepy Eye, arrested a 46-year-old individual in relation to the collision that resulted in the death of a man who was “walking on Maryland Avenue East when he was struck by a work van,” as stated in a news release issued by the city of Maplewood.
The victim has been identified as Abdul Bakr Jafar, a 31-year-old resident of St. Paul, who was fatally struck by a vehicle in the 2300 block of Maryland Ave. E. at around 4:30 a.m. on Friday.
Investigators interviewed a witness who reported seeing a large conversion van equipped with a ladder rack fleeing the scene, and subsequently obtained surveillance footage that documented the hit-and-run incident.
The individual who was arrested is anticipated to face charges of criminal vehicular homicide, according to the release. He has been booked into the Ramsey County Jail, and “alcohol is suspected of being a factor in this case.”
Law enforcement officials indicated that the suspected work van was located with the suspect in Sleepy Eye.
