James Terryl Daniels Obituary, Death; – Authorities have disclosed the identity of a man who was fatally shot by police on a busy roadway in Homewood.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased individual as James Terryl Daniels, a 53-year-old resident of Birmingham.
The incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on Friday, north of Valley Avenue, in proximity to the Red Mountain Plaza shopping center.
The man was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:25 a.m.
No officers sustained injuries.
On Friday afternoon, Homewood police provided the following account of the events:
At approximately 9:40 a.m., officers noticed a man on a bicycle obstructing traffic on Green Springs Highway near Valley Avenue.
The individual, later identified as Daniels, was reportedly weaving in and out of all four lanes of traffic on Green Springs Highway, causing several traffic disruptions, according to police.
Two officers approached the man in the middle of the road on Green Springs Highway and requested his identification.
Daniels responded that he did not wish to identify himself due to having multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest.
He also mentioned that he had previously served time in prison for robbery.
Officers continued to speak to the man, and he eventually identified himself. Officers confirmed that Daniels had four outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrants and had a previous conviction for first-degree robbery.
Court records show Daniels was convicted of first-degree robbery in Shelby County in 1996 and was sentenced to 23 years in prison. It was not clear how long he actually served. The two officers attempted to detain Daniels pending confirmation of his warrants.
“Per standard procedure for officer safety, officers asked if had any weapons,” according to the department’ statement. “The subject became non-compliant and uncooperative, moving himself away from officers and into lanes of oncoming traffic.” Officers gave the man multiple commands to get out of oncoming traffic lanes.
Homewood Fire Department medics responded and provided treatment until Daniels was taken to UAB. The Alabama Attorney General’s Office responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation.
