Vernelle Wright Obituary, Death; – A 40-year-old man was shot and killed on Monday evening following a confrontation at a football watch party in Little Elm, according to police reports.
As stated in a news release from the Little Elm Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Okeefe Drive in Paloma Creek at approximately 9:04 p.m. in response to reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, law enforcement officials discovered a man, later identified as Vernelle Wright, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities reported that Wright was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:49 p.m.
The Little Elm Police Department indicated that investigators determined the shooting resulted from a dispute between two individuals at the football watch party. According to police, the argument escalated and moved to the street, where the suspect, identified as Corey Green, 37, brandished a firearm and shot Wright.
Police stated that Green fled the scene prior to the arrival of officers. However, at 12:02 a.m., he returned and surrendered to the police. Green is currently in custody at the Denton County Jail and is facing a murder charge.
The Little Elm Police Department also noted that its officers, in collaboration with the Denton County Crime Scene Unit and the Texas Rangers, executed search warrants at various related locations.
