John Gregory Conner Obituary, Death; – Authorities have identified the individual who was shot and fatally wounded by an off-duty special agent of the Virginia State Police.
The incident occurred at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday at the residence of the officer, as stated in a press release from the state police. The location was in the Bay Colony neighborhood.
Initial investigations suggest that a 40-year-old man, identified on Monday as John Gregory Conner, approached the front door of the agent’s home and attempted to force entry, according to the state police.
The agent confronted Conner and discharged his weapon, resulting in Conner succumbing to his injuries, as reported by the police. In an update provided on Monday, authorities indicated that the agent administered aid to Conner prior to the arrival of emergency medical services.
The off-duty agent sustained moderate injuries and was subsequently transported for medical care.
“In accordance with departmental policy concerning officer-involved shootings, the agent has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing,” the Virginia State Police news release indicated.
Residents in the vicinity of the Bay Colony area expressed that their neighborhood is generally peaceful.
“I’m just shocked, that’s all I can say to you,” remarked Gerry Maciver, a resident of nearly 40 years. “A little frightened, because I’m not accustomed to any of this happening here. I never expect it.”
She noted that neighbors are curious about who might have attempted to break into the agent’s home in broad daylight.
“We are a very quiet neighborhood, quite well connected with one another, and we look out for each other,” Maciver stated.
At this moment, it remains unclear whether the off-duty agent had any prior acquaintance with the individual attempting to break in or what the man’s intentions may have been.
