Joseph Perechinsky,William Jenkins Obituary, Death; – Two Pennsylvania state troopers were shot and wounded Thursday, Aug. 7, while on duty, police said.
The shooting happened around 11:15 a.m. after Trooper Joseph Perechinsky and Trooper William Jenkins responded to a call near State Route 171 in Thompson Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania State Police said in a press release.
Police said a male gunman opened fire on the responding troopers, both of whom suffered “serious injuries.” The troopers were airlifted to local hospitals, where they were reported to be in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon.
“The suspect was armed with a rifle, refused to comply with commands, and was ultimately shot and killed during the incident,” police said. “There is no remaining threat to the public.”
Police first alerted the public to the incident in a post on X shared just after 2 p.m. Thursday, asking locals to avoid the area. In a statement shared to Facebook on Thursday, Gov. Josh Shapiro said he was aware of the shooting and planned to head to the scene.
“Lori and I are praying for these brave Troopers, and our thoughts are with their families, friends, and every member of the State Police,” the post reads.
Thompson is located about 40 miles north of Scranton. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
