Gumero Olvera Castro Obituary, Death; Capital murder suspect nabbed by Border Patrol trying to flee to Mexico is back in Alabama

Gumero Olvera Castro Obituary, Death; – A Jefferson County murder suspect captured by U.S. Border Patrol as he tried to flee into Mexico has been extradited to Alabama.

Luis Rey Guerro Martinez, 35, is charged with capital murder in the July 6 shooting death of his 33-year-old Gumero Olvera Castro. The two were brothers-in-law, said sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby.

Castro was described as a devoted husband, loving father and cherished and dedicated construction worker.

The charge is capital murder because, according to court documents, Castro was killed in the presence of an 8-year-old child.
Castro was killed shortly before 2:30 a.m. that Sunday in the 800 block of Willow Bend Lane in the Bessemer area.

Deputies and Concord Fire and Responded to the scene, where Castro was pronounced dead at 2:47 a.m.

An argument preceded the deadly shooting.

Martinez, who lives in Hueytown, was taken into custody at 9:35 a.m. Monday, July 7.

Sheriff’s detectives worked with Border Patrol and the Kennedy County Sheriff’s Office in Texas to return Martinez to Alabama.

Castro left behind a wife, a son and two daughters.

“He dedicated himself to providing for them, pouring his heart into his work, embodying the spirit of a true provider,” according to his obituary.
