Dorothy Kent Obituary, Death; – A 76-year-old woman from Bloomington lost her life on Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross the street at the intersection of West Third Street and South Liberty Drive, as reported by the Bloomington Police Department.
Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 4:05 p.m. on August 5, where members of the Bloomington Fire Department were already engaged in efforts to free the pedestrian from under a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The woman, later identified as Dorothy Kent, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital but was declared dead at 4:53 p.m. in the emergency department.
According to police, the driver of the Jeep, a 77-year-old woman from Bloomington, informed investigators that she was heading north on Liberty Drive and was in the process of turning west onto Third Street. She stated that the traffic light had turned yellow, and upon seeing no oncoming traffic, she proceeded to make the turn.
The driver indicated to police that she felt her vehicle make contact with something but did not see the pedestrian before the collision. She remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the investigation. Authorities noted that she exhibited no signs of impairment. Witnesses reported to officers that Kent was walking north across Third Street on the west side of the intersection when the Jeep turned and struck her in the westbound lanes.
Monroe County Coroner Jeff Hall confirmed Kent’s identity and stated that an autopsy has been scheduled. The investigation is still ongoing. Police are actively interviewing witnesses and are in the process of checking with nearby businesses to obtain surveillance footage of the incident.
