Peter Surdo Obituary, Death; – A tragic accident involving several vehicles caused the closure of the southbound lanes of Delaware Route 1 near Argos Corner Road for approximately four hours on Friday morning, as reported by the Carlisle Fire Company.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m., resulting in the engine block of a vehicle being left in the center of the highway and multiple cars positioned in the grassy median. Fire crews from Milford, Milton, Slaughter Beach, and Ellendale arrived at the scene to assist the injured individuals and secure the roadway.

According to the Carlisle Fire Company, three individuals were involved in the collision. One person lost their life, another sustained critical injuries, and a third individual suffered minor injuries. The deceased was identified as 71-year-old Peter Surdo from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, according to the Delaware State Police.

Traffic was redirected onto local roads until the southbound lanes were reopened approximately four hours later. Local resident David Heffley emphasizes the need for drivers to reduce their speed.
“Driving down in lower, slower, Delaware… It’s no longer lower, slower, Delaware,” Heffley remarked.

He believes action is necessary.
“Clearly, improvements to the infrastructure are needed, but that will take time, if it happens at all. Increased police presence may help to some extent, but ultimately, education is key. I think young drivers need to be informed,” Heffley stated. “They often do not realize that they are operating a potentially deadly machine. Truly… An automobile can be just that.”

Local resident Gretchen Bienert mentions that she tries to completely avoid Route 1.

“I have discovered alternative routes, which are much more favorable. There is less traffic. However, people are always in such a rush. It is absurd. Therefore, I steer clear of it,” Bienert expressed.
