Utuva Alaelua Obituary, Death; – On Thursday, the Anchorage police identified the individual who was shot and killed by an officer on Monday night on Bragaw Street as 41-year-old Utuva Alaelua.
The incident commenced with a traffic stop due to a malfunctioning headlight shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Bragaw Street, near the intersection of Peterkin and Thompson avenues, as stated by police Chief Sean Case during a media briefing on Tuesday. Two officers approached the driver and a passenger, both of whom reported observing a firearm in the driver’s lap area during the encounter.
An officer positioned on the passenger side began issuing commands to the driver, after which the officer discharged a single round, according to a police update released on Thursday. Alaelua sustained a gunshot wound and succumbed to his injuries at the scene, as reported by the police. The incident was recorded by body-worn and dashboard cameras; however, Chief Case noted that the low light conditions and the movement of the officers rendered the footage less clear than typically expected. On Thursday, the police provided limited additional information regarding the shooting.
